Gran Canaria Book Shops: Where to Buy Books in English

Are you looking for the best Gran Canaria book shops? Can't find anything worth reading nearby? You've come to the right place. We've toured all of the book shops in town for you. You will need to come to the capital, Las Palmas. In 2022 a couple of big book retailers opened. The book-shopping experience keeps getting better and better. All of the stores listed below are within walking distance, not more than 15 minutes away from each other. They have plenty of books in English and other foreign languages (German, French, etc., and of course in Spanish). Here are our favourites:

Gran Canaria Book Shops: Idiomatika

Libreria Idiomatika: This companyis the foreign language book leader. They supply books to other retailers and department stores. The main shop is located on the other side of the city. 

The book selection at the main store is impressive. The staff were very polite and helpful. Whether you're looking for best-selling novels or non-fiction (like Atomic Habits or 12 Rules of Life), you'll find them right there.

The Biggest Gran Canaria Book Shop: Agapea

Libreria Agapea: This is the biggest store on the island, with over 900 square meters. It opened in 2022. They organise events every week, such as book readings, Spanish author signings, etc.

To check the price of a book, you need to scan it. Remember to press the button on the scanner first, and then pass the bar code, or give a shout to one of the staff members, and they will happily do it for you. The English section has fiction and non-fiction books. You’ll find these, in a corner, on the left, at the end of the shop.

This store opens Mondays to Saturdays, from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.

El Corte Inglés Department Store

El Corte Ingles: This department store has a big area for books on the ground floor. They have almost a hundred novels in English, to choose from.

New for 2022: Casa del Libro

Casa del Libro: This store is located near El Corte Ingles, on the same street, almost at the end. It opened in 2022. They have a bigger selection. Most are novels, but you can find some non-fiction. Almost every week, Spanish authors come to promote and autograph their books.

Re-read: The Best Second Hand Books Shop

Re-read (second-hand books): If you’re on a budget, this is where you can buy books for 3 euros. If you buy 2, then it costs 5 euros. Five books will cost you 10 euros. They also buy used books for 20 cents. This bookstore has a section for English books. Most are novels, but we also saw some non-fiction and comics. The staff are polite and helpful, and that's why they have so many five star reviews on Google ;)
